Origin of Hoi An lanterns.The history of Hoi An lanterns dates back several hundred years, since this was a famous trading port called Faifo (Hai Pho). In the past, when Hoi An was a place where Chinese and Japanese merchants came to trade and establish businesses. People with the surnames Chau, La, and Thai from Chaozhou, Fujian, and Guangdong in China carried lanterns. They hang these lanterns in front of their houses.According to the remaining records, around 206 BC to 25 AD was the flourishing period of Buddhism. From pagodas, monks light lanterns on the full moon night. Then a king brought this custom of lighting lanterns into the king’s palace. The lantern festival has since spread to the people. In Hoi An, hanging lanterns in front of houses on holidays has become a custom for a long time, but has not yet become a neighborhood like it is today.For that reason, we are the people of Hoi An trying to preserve and promote the beauty of light culture.
